Varnish
Varnish is a protective, transparent and hardy finish or film used primarily in wood finishing, but it’s also used as a finishing on other materials. Traditionally, varnish is a careful combination of a resin, a drying oil, and a solvent, or thinner. Typically we think of varnishes as having a ‘glossy’ finish, but of course they’re also designed to produce a satin or semi-glass sheen with the use of flatting agents. Varnish in itself is transparent, with no pigment, unlike wood stains or paints which all contain pigment and range from translucent to opaque. Varnishes can also be applied over a wood stain as the final touch to achieving a lovely gloss finish, plus adding extra protection to the surface. Today you’ll find that some varnish products are being marketed as a combined stain and varnish.
